Go Get ‘Em!

18 03 2008

Many people in our culture are open to visiting a church on Easter. A good percentage of them would be more likely to attend church on Easter if someone would invite them to go with them.

Assuming that most of you who are reading this are already connected to a church, here are some suggestions for inviting people to your church this Sunday. Of course, you will not want to do all of these with anyone…because that would be…well, weird.

Of course, you will want to pray for them to accept your invitation before you approach them!

  • When you invite them to church, try to arrange to pick them up so they can ride with you. This will help eliminate two things: the classic “stand you up” and the unnecessary awkwardness of them arriving at an unfamiliar public place alone.
  • When you invite them to church, also invite them to lunch at your house or at a restaurant (and pay!) afterwards. There, you can discuss the sermon (aka: roast the preacher), the church, or just life stuff. Who knows how long its been since some asked them, “No, really. How are you doing?”
  • When you invite them to church, remain with them at the church building. You are already connected to lots of people, they are not. You might not feel weird sitting alone while your friend mingles about, they will.
  • When you invite them to church, explain what the service will be like.
  • When you invite them to church, explain to them what you will be wearing, and what most of the other folks wear. They will not know unless you tell them. They will second guess themselves (aka: try on everything in their closet on Sunday morning) if you don’t tell them.
  • When you invite them to church, let them know what is available for their children during the time they will be there (and that they don’t have to take advantage of it if they don’t want to).
  • When you invite them to church, give them a reason or two that you like attending your church.
  • When you invite them to church, mention how much joy it would bring to your heart for them to attend with you (you hedonist!)
  • When you invite them to church, give them an idea of the type of people that regularly attend.
  • When you invite them to church… realize that you have just done what you have been intending to do since you first met this person! Yup, you know its true. This is one of the two easiest weeks of the entire year to actually get around to inviting them! So, go get ’em! You won’t be disappointed that you invited them…even if they turn you down. Likely you will be disappointed if you don’t invite them.

Thanks for this. I am passing it along to our entire church email list!
